Moving checklist

Everything that's easy to forget, in the order you'll need it. Print it, or keep it open on your phone.

8 weeks out

  • Set your move date, and a backup date if you can.
  • Get matched with movers and ask for written estimates — at least two or three to compare.
  • For a move between states, look up each mover's USDOT number on the FMCSA site.
  • Walk every room and decide what goes, what's sold, and what's donated. Less stuff is a cheaper move.
  • Start a folder (paper or phone) for estimates, receipts and the moving contract.

4–6 weeks out

  • Book your mover and get the date, price and what's included in writing.
  • Collect boxes, tape, markers and packing paper.
  • Start packing the things you won't miss: off-season clothes, books, decorations.
  • Ask your employer whether any moving costs are covered.
  • Moving with kids? Request school records and ask about enrollment at the new school.

2–3 weeks out

  • Change your address with USPS, and with your bank, cards, insurance and employer.
  • Schedule electricity, water, gas and internet to stop at the old place and start at the new one.
  • Refill prescriptions and move them to a pharmacy near your new home.
  • Use up frozen and pantry food.
  • Arrange time off work for moving day.

The last week

  • Confirm the time, address and price with your mover.
  • Pack a "first night" box: chargers, medicine, toiletries, a change of clothes, sheets, towels, paper towels, a few tools.
  • Label each box with its room and what's inside, on the side, not only the top.
  • Defrost the freezer a day ahead.
  • Keep valuables, documents and cash with you, not on the truck.

Moving day

  • Be there when the movers arrive, and walk them through what goes and what stays.
  • Read the inventory and bill of lading before you sign.
  • Do a last walk-through: closets, cabinets, the attic, the garage.
  • Take photos of the empty rooms and read the meters.
  • Lock up and hand over the keys.

The first week

  • Check boxes and furniture for damage, and report it to the mover in writing quickly.
  • Change or rekey the locks.
  • Find the breaker box and the main water shut-off.
  • Update your driver's license and car registration (states give you a set time to do it).
  • Register to vote at your new address.

The first item is the hard one. Tell us about your move once, and we'll match you with movers.
